Wireless Internet Access Policy

The McKinley Memorial Library offers wireless Internet access inside the Library for patrons with wireless-ready devices such as laptops or PDAs.

The wireless access may be utilized on the 1st floor of the library with the exception of the Children’s Room.

Patrons using the Library’s wireless Internet access via their own devices must abide by all McKinley Memorial Library Internet Use Policy provisions.
For more information, please see the
Internet and Computer Use Policy brochure available at the Reference Desk.

The wireless Internet access is subject to the same security and filtering systems as the Internet workstations in the Computer Room (per item #6 in the Internet Use Policy).

In particular, only Web-based email accounts may be accessed. The wireless service does not allow for email configured through the user’s browser (such as Outlook in Internet Explorer, or Netscape Mail) that utilizes SMTP, POP, or IMAP.

The Library can not guarantee that: (1) wireless access will be available at all times; (2) the wireless network will operate with all personal devices; and/or
(3) access speeds will be consistent among different types of devices.

CONNECTING:
You will need a laptop or suitable PDA equipped with an IEEE 802.11b or 802.11g wireless network card.  Your device must be configured to automatically detect available wireless networks; the Library’s network is named:
Public-Wireless.

If your device is not detecting the Library’s wireless network, the Library staff can not assist you as not all wireless cards and devices operate in the same way, and staff can not accept the liability of handling your equipment. You may need to consult technical support resources for your particular device.

SECURITY CONSIDERATIONS:

Communications over a wireless network are less secure than through a hard-wired network. Information sent from or to your laptop or other device may be “captured” by anyone with a wireless device and appropriate software in your proximity. It is recommended that you do not use such a network to transmit personal, financial, legal or other sensitive information. The wireless connection is used entirely at the risk of the owner. In addition, virus and security protection for personal devices is the responsibility of the patron.

For your protection, laptops and PDAs must not be left unattended. The McKinley Memorial Library assumes no responsibility for any personal equipment that is left unattended.

OTHER USAGE NOTES:

There are no power outlets available for patron use in the areas of the Library that allow wireless access. Please be sure to fully charge your battery before coming to the Library.

You will not be able to print directly from your wireless device. You could, however, save documents on a portable memory device that may be used in one of the Library’s workstations that is connected to a printer.

Please turn off the sound on your device and bring a set of headphones, if needed,  to prevent music and other sounds from disturbing others.

The Wireless Internet Access Policy is subject to revision at any time by the McKinley Memorial Library Board of Trustees and/or by the administration of OPLIN. All Internet users must abide by the current active policy in place at the time of use.
