McKinley Memorial Library

Interlibrary Loan

Philosophy:
Interlibrary loan (ILL) service is essential to the vitality of libraries of all types and sizes as a means of greatly expanding the range of materials available to all users.  Since it is increasingly evident that it is impossible for any one library to be self-sufficient, and in the belief that the furtherance of knowledge is in the general interest, interlibrary borrowing and lending is regarded as essential to library service.   Lending among libraries is in the public interest and should be encouraged.

Library Users:
ILL service is available to all McKinley Memorial Library cardholders regardless of age, sex, religion, race, social or economic status, ethnic background, sexual orientation, disability or special needs or place of residence.

General Guidelines for Interlibrary Loan Service
Certain types of material are not ordinarily requested or lent by libraries:

  1. Titles in current and/or recurring demand

  2. Duplicates of titles already owned by McKinley Memorial Library

  3. Ephemeral materials (pamphlets, fliers, etc.)

ILL requests will be treated in a confidential manner.

Scope of Interlibrary Loan Service

  1. All requests must be made in person from a current library patron

  2. Patrons may request up to three (3)items at a time.  Once one item is returned, another item may be requested.

  3. There are many occasions when the items are not available due to the borrowing policies of other institutions.

  4. All copyright laws and guidelines are followed (Title 17, U.S. Code).

  5. Library users should travel to other libraries for on-site access to material when extensive use of a collection is required or the nature of material requires special handling.

  6. If a library user has not picked up or lost a previous ILL item, no further ILL requests will be processed.

  7. Patrons, who have McKinley Memorial Library fines exceeding the Library's Borrowing Guidelines, or other restrictions, may not request materials from other libraries until restitution is made.

McKinley Memorial Library reserves the right to determine the most cost-effective delivery procedure for requested items-based on the material to be delivered.

Cost

  1. No fees will be charged for items loaned or borrowed via the Interlibrary Loan, unless the lending institution charges a borrowing fee. The patron is then responsible for that fee.

  2. Lost items will be subject of the cost of the items, and is determined by the lending institution.
